A LETTER TO EVERYONE
Quick! Without overthinking, what are ten things you love about yourself?
Stop thinking about it.
Seriously, I’m waiting for an answer here…
In all honesty, why does this take so long for people to answer? I’ve asked this question to quite a few people in my life, and though some are more quick to answer than others, usually the answers start to taper off after number five or six.
I don’t understand why.
Because when I look at you, all that I can think is that you’re incredible. Your intelligence is bewildering, your humour is endearing and your love is admirable. Your strength is enviable and your kindness is what the world needs more of. I admire your passion, your perseverance and your willingness to keep going even when a hurricane is barreling down on you. I love your mind, your open heart and how both of those things manage to make everyone you know feel better about themselves.
I love that you’re complimentary. I do. And I really wish you would take some of those compliments you so graciously give to others and give them to yourself. Because you deserve them.
A few years back I read a quote that I think is important for more people to hear. The quote read: ‘In a society that profits from your self-doubt, liking yourself is a rebellious act. Loving yourself is anything but naive. If you don’t become your best friend, who else will? If you don’t convey confidence in what you do, don’t expect others to trust you. We are what we believe we are. When you embrace your true identity, there’s no room for self-doubt and though the shadow of self-doubt might show up unexpectedly, it’s up to you to move from darkness to light’.
Reading this quote had me thinking, self-doubt lives in a vacuum, sucking up the good parts of our personality and making it harder for us to love ourselves. It’s true. If you don’t convey confidence in what you do, don’t expect others to trust you. We are what we believe we are. I could go on and on, but the quote, it speaks for itself.
I don’t want society to profit from my self-doubt, or your self-doubt, or anyone’s self-doubt. I want to be able to ask people ten things they love about themselves and have them roll ten things off their tongue like they’ve been dying to speak those words. I want to hear passion, love and self-acceptance in their voice when they tell me how much they love themselves. Because they deserve it.
I encourage everyone to stand in the mirror each morning and remind themselves of all the things they love about themselves. It’s such an important reminder. Because I can tell you over and over and over again all of the things that I love about you, but I promise you this, those words will matter so much more when they come from you, when you’re telling them to yourself.
Love yourself. You deserve it.
And I want a real answer next time I ask you that question.
Sincerely, Vee
